The annual tree-lighting extravaganza has become one of New York City’s most celebrated events for the past 76 years.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is 74 feet high, 40 feet in diameter, and weighs a whopping 12 tons.
Made out of Norwegian spruce wood, it will be lighted by 30,000 “environ-friendly LED lights,” according to the Rockefeller website, which are strung on no less than five miles of wire.

At its crown, the Christmas tree will have a star made out of Swarovski crystal.

Considered a must-see attraction in New York City, the tree will be lighted on November 30, in a grand ceremony from 7p.m. to 9p.m., and will stay illuminated until January 2, 2011.

Charice, all of 18 years old, will be part of that ceremony. This makes the diminutive girl the first Filipino artist invited to perform at the annual New York City event.

Josh Groban, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson, and Sheryl Crow are among those expected to take part in the musical spectacle.

Other artists invited to the event are Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins, Scottish pop singer Annie Lennox, Britain’s Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle, and 10-year-old opera singer Jackie Evancho of America’s Got Talent fame.

The dance group, Radio City Rockettes, is expected to kick off the holiday special that will feature a mix of current hits and holiday classics.

The Rockefeller Center plaza is a complex of 19 buildings spread over 22 acres of prime New York City real estate. Located between 48th and 51st streets in midtown Manhattan, the center was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1987.

According to the Rockefeller official website, the center was named after John Davison Rockefeller, “a major philanthropist and businessman” who lived from January 28, 1874 to May 11, 1960.

Charice admitted she was overwhelmed when told she had been invited to the lighting ceremony of the world-famous Christmas tree.

“Parang nahulog naman ako sa upuan. Mabigat ang lineup, e. Nabigatan ako sa sarili ko, parang kailangan ng malupit-lupit na kanta dito,” she said.

She added, like a kid, “Biritan na ito!”

She also said, “Blessings po and thank you. Sobra namang good news. May bakasyon na nga, may good news pa!”

When asked what song she will perform for this high-profile event, the young girl said, “Actually, iyon pa rin po ang pinag-uusapan namin. Isa po sa pinag-iisipan namin yung ‘The Christmas Song.’”

This classic was composed by Mel Torme and Bob Wells in 1944 during a particularly hot summer. At the time, according to the wikipedia, composer Torme said that writing the song was an effort “to stay cool by thinking cool.”

The great Nat King Cole recorded the song in 1946, and it joined the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974.

Words go: Chestnuts roasting in an open fire/ Jack Frost nipping at your nose/ Yuletide carols being sung by a choir/ and folks dressed up like Eskimos/ Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe/ Help to make the season bright/ Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow/ Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa’s on his way/ He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh/ And every mother’s child is gonna spy/ To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

Chorus: And so I’m offering this simple phrase/ To kids from one to ninety-two/ Although it’s been said many times/ Many times many ways, Merry Christmas to you.

It will be interesting to see how Charice interprets this classic. If, as she said, this is “biritan na,” that ups the ante on the singer’s versatility. After all, everyone knows it’s not enough for Charice to fly with those high notes. She also needs to hew to the classicism of a song known nearly the world over and to keep the song close to what Christmas believers hold dear.

Currently, Charice is in the Philippines after completing the Asian tour of David Foster and Friends, with sold-out concerts in Tokyo, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta and Singapore.

The singer, who is the first Asian artist to land in the Top 10 of Billboard 200, received standing ovations for her performances, as did her fellow performers Natalie Cole, Ruben Studdard, Peter Cetera and The Canadian Tenors.

Charice also recently won the Icon of Tomorrow title in J-14 magazine’s Teen Icon Awards, beating teen stars Bella Thorne, Bridgit Mendler, Frankie Jonas, and Greyson Chance from the U.S. and Cody Simpson from Australia.

The Philippine Normal University Chorale (PNUC) bagged the grand championship in the 1st Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) International Choir Competition 2010 in Bandung, Indonesia.

Aside from being the grand champion, the PNU Chorale emerged as category winners in Mixed Voices-Historical, Mixed Voices-Free Program and Mixed Voices-Young Adult. It also placed third in the Folk Song category.

The PNUC members first competed on July 30. They sang “La Guerre” and “Ama Namin” for the historical category and “Ove Lass Il Bel Viso,” “Que Rico E” and “Everybody Dance Now” for the free program.

On the following day, they sang two Filipino folk songs – “Day Baling” and “Tarimbaba Punjungan” plus an Indonesian folk song, “Gai Bintang.” In the young adult category, they sang “Aba Po Santa Mariang Reyna,” “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” and another Filipino folk song, “Pok Pok Alimpako.”

Several members of the PNUC even had a “Meet the Jury” session on August 1. They were able to talk to the judges and ask for comments on their performances.

PNUC member Melissa Regaya said the choir was ecstatic when they were judged winners in 3 categories.
“Our choir was ecstatic,” she . “We prayed to say thanks and our conductor reminded us that if before whenever we sang in each category eh, it’s like we’re praying to God to help us and be with us. Now na we won, we will sing in the championship round, we are singing to praise God and give thanks for His help and blessings.”

They then sang thrice in the championship round.

The 1st ITB International Choir Competition, also called the Festival Paduan Suara Institut Teknologi Bandung (FPS ITB), is the biggest and most awaited national choral event in Indonesia. It has been held biennially since 1968 in the national level. It became an international choral tilt in 2010.

The awarding was held after the gala concert of the Madz at the closing of the 58th International Choral Competition held in Arezzo, Italy.

The country’s premier singing group was honored for “the artistic and choral promotion activity that they carried out after they won the European Grand Prix in Choral Singing in 2007.”

The Madz’s choir director Mark Anthony Carpio received the award from Francesco Lusi, the president of the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo. He said: “The Foundation has followed attentively and with great pleasure the fruitful activities of the Philippine Madrigal Singers and is grateful for all that they have done for the choral world.”

The Madz is the only choir in the world to win the Grand Prix in two consecutive years, 2006 and 2007 in one of the top global choral competitions.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers was formed at the University of the Philippines nearly 50 years ago by National Artist Andrea O. Veneracion. The concept then was for the mixed group to specialize in the madrigal, a music form that originated in Italy during the Renaissance.

The Madrigal’s strong point are their adeptness in church music, show tunes, Filipino songs and pop. In fact, the Madz latest CD release, Madz In Love is a collection of love songs in various pop forms.

Arezzo was the first leg of the Madz’s 2010 European tour. They will also be performing in other cities in Europe like Rome, Milan, Vienna, Prague, Berlin and others. They also did two songs, I Will Sing Forever and I Can Tell The World during an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

The UST Singers won the top prize in the Mixed Choir Category, which qualified the group for the COTW competition.

The COTW trophy is named after the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who started his career as a singer at the same Llangollen International Musical Eistedfodd stage in 1955 when he was a choirboy in an All-Male Choir in Modena, Italy. His choir emerged as the All-Male Choir Champion in the same competition in 1955. The Pavarotti name was added to the COTW title in 2005.

Sid Lucero

Acclaimed Filipino actor Sid Lucero failed to snag the country’s first golden statue at the 38th International Emmy Awards in New York, but took home a gold medal held.

English actor Bob Hoskins (“Hook,” “Who Framed Roger Rabit”), considered by Sid as one of his most admired personalities, bagged the “Best Performance by an Actor” trophy for his role on “The Street.” He topped other fellow nominees Leonardo Sbaraglia of Argentina and Sebastian Koch of Germany.

Sid, the first Filipino actor to ever be nominated in that category, nevertheless received a gold medal from the award-giving body for his intense portrayal of Red Ramirez in the similarly nominated series, “Dahil May Isang Ikaw.”

In an interview a day before the awards night aired on ABS-CBN’s “Balitang America,” Sid expressed his gratitude over the recognition.

“Para sa inyo naman talaga ‘yung ginagawa naming trabaho eh, so siguro ito (medal) ‘yung pinakamalaking thank you na naibigay ng buong Pilipinas sa’kin.

“This means that I’m doing my job well enough for the world to realize that we do, as in the Philippines, our industry has what it takes given its limitations,” he said.

“Dahil May Isang Ikaw,” directed by Jerry Lopez-Sineneng and Richie del Carmen, likewise lost to Portugal’s “My Love” for “Best Telenovela.”

With the many accolades that the country and its artists have been receiving, Sid—the 2008 Thessaloniki (Greece) International Festival’s Best Actor for the film “Selda”—believes that, “We have a chance to make a dent in this industry worldwide, despite the limitations that we have.”

“Ano pa kaya kung mabigyan tayo ng mas malaking budget? Or mas maraming oras? Ano pa kaya?” he maintained.

Although an esteemed actor in the Philippines, Sid also looked forward during his New York trip to meet “everyone who has made it, it’s like an inspiration to all the actors.”

Kim Regasa [ABS-CBN]

Even if he failed to win in Holland’s Got Talent, a Dutch-Pinoy is the new rising star in Holland.
Kim Regasa has been dubbed by the media as the “mini Michael Jackson” of Holland.

Making it among the 9 finalists from the 4,000 who auditioned in the British reality talent-search franchise owned by Simon Cowell, Regasa easily became a crowd favorite.

At the audition, the very popular Dutch judge named Gordon praised Regasa and suggested he sounded like the young Michael Jackson.

So, Regasa’s mother immediately changed his repertoire and searched for Jackson Five songs.

Come semi-finals, when he sang “Who’s Loving You” by the Jackson Five, the crowd and the 3 judges stood up and gave Regasa the longest standing ovation on the show.

The following day, Regasa was all over the news, and the media aptly dubbed him as the “mini Michael Jackson” of Holland.

But Regasa did not bag the title in the finals as tenor Martin Hurkens received the most text votes, winning the top prize in Holland’s Got Talent 2010.

Because he’s still very young, failure did not wreck Regasa’s night and the days ahead.

According to him, singing was just like playing. It’s, in fact, a hobby and a past-time that he spends with his Filipina mother Mabel.

It’s no wonder then that from all the contestants in Holland’ Got Talent, Regasa had been praised for his good poise and steady calm on stage.

American judge Dan Karaty found him as a real star material and a born entertainer.

Even if he did not win, Regasa is very happy with what he has achieved, and also because he was able to showcase his Pinoy talent to the Dutch viewers.

“Talagang ano masaya talaga ako tapos yung family ko sa Pilipinas nanood sila sa YouTube, maganda talaga,” Regasa said.

Regasa said he was not disappointed for losing after such a promising start and smooth sailing to the finals.

“Hindi po, never mind lang po,” Regasa said.

Regasa was better known as a Dutch-Filipino contestant because he always mentions that he was born in the Philippines.

“He’s born there so he can be proud of where he comes from, that’s why I always tell him and my daughter also. Don’t forget where you came from. Even if we live in Holland, you’re still a Pinoy,” Regasa’s father Carlo de Blank said.

Regasa’s sentimental attachment to the Philippines could have been the result of his closeness with Mabel, who taught him how to sing.

Mabel, who hails from Lucena, Quezon, was also a singer, and it was during her singing stint in Singapore that she met Carlo.

Mabel says that in her youth, she was an “amateur.” She used to join all amateur singing contests just so she can earn money to help feed her poor family.

“Kinakailangan mong kumanta para may maitulong ka sa pamilya. May time pa nga ang amateur nasa bundok, sasakay ka pa sa paragos para marating mo yung singing contest na yun. Yun ang buhay ng amateurista na natutuwa naman ako na hindi naransan ni Kim,” Mabel said.

Regasa’s education is still the family’s priority, which is why Carlo and Mabel have put a strict limit as to the bookings of their son which have now started to pour in.

Many fans of Regasa have posted video clips of his performances at Holland’s Got Talent on YouTube.
Is this a sign that it will be possible for Regasa to trek the same road travelled by the now famous Charice?

Luigi Seno, 20, played guitar and sang a bluesy version of Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning", winning praise from the AGT judges and loud applause from the audience.

Luigi Seno

"Luigi, you have a really cool, relaxed style. Fantastic," said judge Sharon Osbourne.
Judge Howie Mandel said Seno looked shy, "like a young kid", when he walked out on the AGT stage with his guitar.

"As soon as you started strumming on that guitar, you, like, opened up. You are truly a great entertainer. If you had an album right now, I'd be listening to you in my car. I would be," he said.

Third judge Piers Morgan, on the other hand, said it was not just Seno's talent that got his attention but his undeniable charm.

"I'll tell you what it is. It's not just that you're a good guitar player, or that you're a very comfortable singer and a good singer, it's the fact that you've got this charm about you, which I think is going to go a long way," he said.

All three judges voted Seno into the next round, with the chance to win the US$1 million grand prize.
In an interview before his performance, Seno said he was born and raised in the Philippines before his family moved to California 8 years ago.

His parents described him as shy but with a passion for singing. "He practices every day. I'm so blessed," said Seno's mom.

Seno said his family inspired him to join the competition. "They brought me here to get a better life. It was really tough back in the Philippines so I just want to give back to them," he said.
