Pinoy math wizards win 31 medals in South Korea

Filipino math wizards again showed their mastery of numbers by bagging 31 medals including 2 team gold medals at the International Math Competition (IMC) held in South Korea on July 25 to 29.

The entire Philippine team bagged 2 golds, 1 silver, 28 bronzes, and 11 merit awards, said Dr. Simon Chua, head of the RP delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG), and Rechilda Villame, MTG vice president.

MTG, an organization of math experts, trains Filipino students for math competitions abroad.

The two gold medals were won by Philippine Teams A and B in the elementary division of the contest, dubbed Korea Elementary Mathematics International Competition (KEMIC). They also won a bronze medal in the group contest.

“We are delighted about the great showing of our Filipino students in the contest,” said Dr. Chua.
Members of elementary Team A of the Philippines include: Jason Joseph Fernandez of San Beda College Alabang in Muntinlupa City, Kaye Janelle Yao of Grace Christian College, and Ma. Czarina Angela Lao and Vince Benedict Say, both of Saint Jude Catholic School.

Elementary Team B members, on the other hand, are: Raymond Joseph Fadri of San Beda College Alabang, Andrew Brandon Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College, Austin Edrich Chua of Saint Jude Catholic School, and Nathaniel Joshua Balete of Philippine Institute of Quezon City.

In the high school division, dubbed Korea Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-City Competition,
Team A of the Philippines won a silver medal in the team contest. Members of this team include: Janssen Lawrence Chan, Michelin Ang, Camille Tyrene Dee and Sarah Jane Cua.
